Minia University

Minia University came into being after the former “Assiut University/ Minia Branch” was spun off as “Minia University” in 1976 by Presidential Decree number 93/1976.

The campus lies 247 kilometers to the South of Cairo. In 1976, the University had 5 faculties: Agriculture, Engineering & Technology, Arts, Education, and Science. Today Minia University has 16 faculties as well as a technical nursing institute affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine. The increasing number of faculties is meant to cope with the increasing needs of Northern Upper Egypt governorates, and contribute to their development in cultural, medical and scientific domains. In the academic year 2000-2001, 36547 undergraduate students and 2572 postgraduates are enrolled in Minia University. Minia University has established strong and cooperative relationships with many of the international universities and institutions worldwide.

Department of Construction Engineering, merging both Civil and Architecture disciplines, has been established in 1978.Civil Engineering Department has been separated in 1985. Civil Engineering Department is responsible for teaching the following subjects: structure analysis, steel structures, reinforced concrete structures, materials, construction management, geotechnique, surveying & geodesy, transportation, road engineering, traffic, railways, sanitary engineering, hydraulics and irrigation. The Civil Engineering Department has the interest of research project in the previous fields. The department grants the following grades in the previous fields: B.Sc. (10 semesters study), M.Sc. (at least 4 semesters study including a thesis), Ph.D. (at least two years period with a dissertation). Civil Engineering Department has different traditional labs, such as: materials, surveying, road and soil mechanics.
